The Tennessee Central Xpress was formed on June 1, 2008, by Ken Hall of
Monterey. Over the past twenty-five years, Hall had owned four successful minor
league professional football teams and wanted to bring minor league football to
the Upper Cumberland region to give local athletes the opportunity to continue
their football careers.
The team is named for the Tennessee Central Railroad which served the Upper
Cumberland from the early 1900's until the late 1960's. Thirteen members of the
Hall family had worked for that railroad and Hall wanted to honor their memory and
the importance that railroad had on the region by naming the team for it.
Hall played as a defensive end for Castle Heights Military Academy and joined the
Chattanooga Cowboys of the Southern Football League in 1988. He played three
seasons for the Cowboys and two seasons for the Chattanooga Blues as an
offensive guard and defensive end.
In 2007, Hall was inducted into the Minor League Football Hall of Fame in Mesquite,
Nevada as a defensive end and was inducted into the Chattanooga Steam Football
Hall of Fame in 2009 as its first inductee. Hall's jersey number 91 is retired from
the Xpress lineup.
The Xpress is a proud member of the United South Football League (USFL), the
Minor League Football News, the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce and the
Monterey Merchant's Association. The team is active in the community and has
volunteered for the Redbud Bicycle Rodeo, the Spring on the Mountain Dogwood
Festival, the Monterey Senior Citizen's 5K Run, and the Standing Stone Celebration.
The Xpress finished their first season with a record of 4 wins and 6 losses. The
team placed four players on the USFL All-Star team.
